A course for new students in higher education who need to brush up their knowledge of basic grammar in English.
course design (c) by Herbert Dutzler, 2007

Subject: English

Upper Secondary / BHS year 1-3 / AHS year 5-6

The unit focuses on the application of grammar (modal verbs) in everyday English. The learning package can be used for self-study, but it is much more effective to train vocabulary (paraphrasing) and the correct use of modals in class, either by using laptop computers or a presentation computer and a data projector. Please, take a look at the notes for teachers and students at the beginning of the learning package before you start working through. The unit offers a huge variety of signs, but it is not necessary to work through the whole package! An emphasis should be put on spoken English and not on grammar theory!

Length: approx. 2 units - but it can also be separated in bits and pieces for a continuous training of modal verbs, e.g. at the beginning of the lessons.

"Stop all the Clocks"- a poetic contemplation of death

Subject: English

Level: Year 7

Desription of content:

In this course students are invited to deal with a very famous poem written on death - "Stop all the Clocks" by W.H. Auden. The popularity of this work of verse is mainly due to the fact that it featured prominently in the film "Four Weddings and a Funeral". The tasks focus on listening skills, analytical aspects involved in interpreting poetry, furthermore the acquisition of a theoretical framework for analyzing metrical compositions as well as a test on recognizing various figures of speech. All the tasks are meant to enable students to finally come up with an in-depth analysis/ interpretation of the poem.
